Food catch-up

This has been a not-so-creative week food-wise over here. I'm so over eating roots and soup and other warm comforts and am rawring for the fresh salads and fruits and steamed veggies. Also, I have had a massive craving for some sorbet and some sort of lemon bundt cake. Mmm. Perhaps this weekend or later on the week!

I made those mock chickn wings, from the asian store, this week. I kept it simple, with a homemade concocted bbq sauce, and some slaw in an olive oil/apple cider vinegar/thyme dressing. You'll see a lot of slaw in this post, as I have 2 heads of cabbage to use up!

I thought I'd try out that sweet potato pizza pie crust that has been making it's way around the blogosphere and the PPK. I didn't plan real well toppings-wise, and had a last minute decision to make the spicy tempeh and broccoli rabe (from Veganomicon, minus the rotini) to go on it. Toppings were lovely, but the crust was meehhh. Wouldn't make it again. I guess I was expecting more of a sweet potato taste, but it just tasted like super-grainy whole wheat crust, that was a little sweet. Kinda dry and hard too, especially around the edges. I'm trying to make myself eat less white flour and more whole, but I think I just can't go all out healthy for pizza. :)

Crash hot potatoes, from VeganYumYum! Yeaaah! So yummy and simple. I admit that I didn't think these were going to be any big deal, but they ended up super-tasty. Nik was raving over them too.

This is the BBQ Pork, from the Asian market, with more bbq sauce (can you tell that I really want it to be warm and sunny out?), and more slaw. Bonus pickle! Ahh summer.

Nik cooked up the dumplings we bought a few weeks ago! I was amazed! He even didn't spice them up as much as he wanted to, for my wimpy taste buds. Yay boyfriends in the kitchen!

This was for Nik: grilled avocado and FYH cheese on sourdough bread. Side salad w/ ranch dressing. I just had a mega salad and a slice of bread with avocado slices and was lovin' it.

Some works in progress

I've been working on this girly for quite some time now, and she still isn't quite finished. Sometimes I feel a lot of pressure (totally put on by myself) to just createcreatecreate and whip things out as fast as possible. That has always been one of my strong points in working, is how fast I can get things finished, but sometimes I just need to take it back a notch and spend multiple days, even weeks, on a piece. It's been on my mind lately, so I just have been taking more care in the process... I don't want to not enjoy it anymore or become machine-like! So anyways, this girly has a few friends, that will be part of a series. I also decided to work big (it's gonna be fun to scan!) on this one (18"x24"). As a side note, I can't stop drawing peacock-style designs lately.

This is what I'm working on right at this moment. I've been digging fat bunnies lately. Also, impatient for flowers to start blooming. There are a few recipe boxes in the background, which have been out-of-stock in my shop for awhile now. The store I get them at randomly decided to restock them, after being out of them for months and telling me they were discontinuing them. Hmpf!

I have a catch-up food post tomorrow. I am SO ready for big huge summer salads. No more roots!!!

Two new prints in the shop! I can't take this "hinting at spring" thing that's going on. I put my winter coat in the closet, and dammit, I'm not bringing it out again (of course, this means that I'm freezing walking to work in the mornings in my spring coat).

2 posts in one day, what!

I've been meaning to post this all week! Nik and I went on an adventure last saturday to the 4th St. Co-op in Manhattan and May Wah in Chinatown. We got some pretty sweet deals and awesomeness all around. May Wah was absolutely amazing, and I can't believe it has taken me this long to go there.

Ham Tube!!

Hello BBQ Chicken legs, coming right up:

This fakin' bacon freaked me out, but Nik insisted. They were okay fried in some olive oil and liquid smoke. The rubberiness of them before they were cooked, was outright creepy.

Dumplings! so cheap!

BBQ Veggie Pork!

I've been looking for Big TVP chunks! Ohh what to do with them!?

And from the Co-op, CHEEZLY! I've been wanting to try this for awhile now. I think I liked Teese better, but this is still pretty tasty. It has a sweet taste to it. Also, this goes perfect with Ham Tube!

Bulk stuff from Co-op and from my CSA on saturday morning. Those fun looking beans are called Cattle Beans and they cook so fast! After soaking for 8ish hours, I only had to boil them for 30 minutes or so (and that was too long, as they got a little mushy). Really good though; kinda peppery. Wheat berries (CSA), cashews (CSA), Black Beans (CSA), Chickpeas (co-op), plus I got a whole bunch of nooch and vital wheat gluten for super-cheap at the Co-op. Heck yeah!

I got these frozen Red Bean sweet buns at May Wah. We steamed them and sprinkled some powdered sugar on them. Love!

Sunday morning waffles and fakin' bacon:

Ham Tube + Cheezly=HAWAIIAN PIZZA! I was so excited about this. I even ground up my wheat berries and (using the VWAV recipe) used half wheat flour and half white for the crust. Pineapples on anything is the "best thing ever" to me, so this was a guaranteed success. Cheezly melted nicely also and paired quite nicely with the ham tube. I really like saying ham tube. It's totally gross sounding, but oh so delicious.

Ham and cheeze melt! This rocked. If the cheezly wasn't so expensive, I would totally make this more often. Side salad of red cabbage, cashews, turnips, carrots, LOTS of red onions, garlic, and a olive oil/apple cider vinegar dressing.

Cattle bean burger (with veganaise and avocado) and sweet potato fries (with cumin, salt, pepper, agave nectar, and sriracha). I used the Black Bean burger recipe from VCon (totally my default burger recipe now), but just replaced the beans and spices.

Unicorn Love

Happy weekend everyone! I've been into mythical creatures lately and have doodling them a lot in preparation for a new series. Googling unicorns brings up some pretty cheese-a-rific results. Here's a doodle I did last night, while watching The Sandlot on tv (foreeeevvvverrrrrr).

A treasury I made the other day made the front page of Etsy tonight! Hooray! A couple things sold from it too, so yaay to everyone featured in it. I totally covet everything in it.

I made some veggie sushi the other night: Spicy tempeh rolls and avocado/turnip rolls. Yum! Hadn't had it in such a long time either.

And ohh, Katie's DEOTS Tempeh Wingz; How I love you. Ate this with some yummers homemade potato soup too. I finally made some broth from all the frozen veggie skins I've been accumulating in the freezer too. I cooked half of it down and put them into ice cube trays. We'll see how that works, a la bouillon cubes.

Nik worked late last night, so I made a healthy bowl of awesome, that he prolly wouldn't have been into. Brown rice plus raw turnips, avocado, red cabbage, and some local walnuts. Dash of shoyu, tablespoon or so of white miso, drizzle of olive oil, and some salt/pepper. Totally awesome healthy bowl.

Smile, It's almost Friday

Walking to work this morning, the bright sunshine and the general not-that-coldness out made me wanna turn around and just sit by the window and doodle all day in the sunlight. Alas, I went to work. But the weekend is almost here and I will indulge! Spring is being an awful tease lately. Poking its head out and then burying itself with a foot of snow. Sheesh.
